Researchers have found multiple e-liquid CBD products that contain synthetic CBD and other psychoactive substances.
The Virginia Commonwealth University researchers evaluated nine e-liquid CBD products obtained from one manufacturer, Diamond CBD, reported NORML. The e-liquids were promoted as being “100 percent natural CBD extracts.”
“The analysis of these products resulted in the detection of CBD in all nine products and the unexpected detections of 5-fluoro MDMB-PINACA (5F-ADB) in four of the products and dextromethorphan (DXM) in one of the products,” the researchers published.
5F-ADB is a deadly synthetic cannabinoid oftentimes used in the drug “spice.”
“The addition of 5F-ADB and DXM compounds to the CBD products may lead to unexpected psychoactive effects,” the researchers noted. “Uninformed users may mistakenly associate these effects with CBD. The inclusion of these drugs in e-liquids can lead to dangerous consequences; particularly when the users are unaware, and the product are used for therapeutic reasons.”
These findings illustrate the quality control issues that sometimes occur in an unregulated industry. It is wise to purchase CBD products from businesses with strict quality control standards, such as state-licensed dispensaries.
