Cannabis use is on the rise among seniors in the United States, according to a new study.
The study reflects Americans’ changing attitudes toward marijuana, NBC News reported.
Study co-author Bill Jesdale mentioned that cannabis use among Baby Boomers increased in states where cannabis is legalized for recreational use as well as in the states where it is not.
“It seems that something has happened to the country as a whole,” Jesdale said.
Survey data from 2016 to 2018 on 171,507 Americans ages 55 and up from 19 states and two U.S. territories was collected for the study.
Men had the biggest increase in marijuana use. Between 2016 and 2018, marijuana use nearly doubled among males ages 65 to 69, from 4.3% in 2016 to 8.2% in 2018, and among males ages 70 to 74, from 3.2% to 6%. Women had a smaller change in marijuana use during the same years.
Americans ages 18 to 25 remain the largest segment of marijuana users, with nearly 39% reporting use in 2018.
