Connecticut Thinks It Can Create a Marijuana Industry Bigger Than Colorado’s

CT Weed

Legalizing recreational marijuana in New England is trending. Connecticut thinks it can do better than Colorado in terms of revenue, regulation and overall industry sustainability. Colorado rakes in over $200 million annually from taxes on an industry that generates over $1 billion – Connecticut wants to top that.

If Connecticut legalizes recreational marijuana, half of the tax revenue would go to local areas where the sales take place, according to New Haven Register.  The other 50-percent of the revenues would go to the state, at least that’s what’s speculated right now. Lawmakers see the money being spent on the streets for marijuana. The state wants to capitalize on that income.

Regulation and taxation has worked in other states, Connecticut lawmakers believe it could work there too. Some lawmakers understand that their residents will travel to Massachusetts to obtain recreational marijuana. They want to keep that revenue in Connecticut.

Some even think that if they don’t legalize recreational marijuana they might as well “build a new highway to accommodate the traffic to our northern neighbor” providing a direct path to New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Heated discussions regarding legal recreational marijuana in Connecticut are expected in the near future.
